THE Town of Bassendean has reported an increase in discarded fishing line, hooks and sinkers being left along the Swan River.

A town spokesperson said discarded fishing line and tackle can cause extensive harm.

“These can have devastating effects for wildlife, and cause injury to people and pets trying to enjoy our river reserves,” they said.

Echo News asked the town if they were planning to take particular steps to address the issue such as additional signage, fishing line disposal bins, clean-up efforts or community education.

Town of Bassendean chief executive officer Cameron Woods said disposal bins are already available to the public.

“The Town of Bassendean participates in the Reel It In – River Guardians Program, which provides bins for disposal of fishing line and tackle in river areas,” he said.

“The town removes any accessible discarded fishing line and tackle and reports any further issues to the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA).”

People fishing along the river are urged to keep bait covered, avoid throwing fish scraps into the water and never feed wildlife.

They are also encouraged to dispose of rubbish and fishing line safely, roll up unwanted fishing line and cut it into small lengths before disposal, and never leave fishing line unattended.

The town also asks visitors to pick up rubbish they see, even if it is not theirs, and report any fishing line they cannot safely remove.
