MUNDARING residents are hoping the shire will contribute more funding towards the Community Sculpture Project 2025.

Mundaring Arts Centre (MAC) executive director for arts and culture Jenny Haynes said Wheels reached out to the centre to see if they could organise a new sculpture for the Sculpture Park.

Ms Haynes said she noticed a passion to upgrade the chosen site, which was at the western end of the park.

Ms Haynes said a friends group was established to replant and rehabilitate the site as there were a lot of weeds growing.

She said school groups, Wheels, the MAC, the shire and volunteers have all worked together to revitalise the site and it had become a whole community engagement project.

Ms Haynes said local sculptor Jason Maxlow was selected to develop the concept with the groups.

She said the committee was drawn to Mr Maxlow’s work on laterite stone, which he polishes then carves into different forms.

“The design that he’s continued to work on with the students that have been involved in the project the whole way along is to create the fallen foliage on the forest floor.”

Ms Haynes said they would like for the sculpture to be interactive.

“People can come and have educational talks and meetings and gather there.

“So it’s not just a sculpture that you walk past, it’s a place that people can continue those conversations around that park and why this environment is so special.”

At the April council meeting, Wheels representative Cheryl Osborne spoke in favour of the motion and highlighted the intergenerational aspect of the project.

“We also would like to leave a little legacy when we’re all past up to greater pastures and have a sculpture there,” Ms Osborne said.
