AN elected Coalition government has promised to deliver $1.96 million to upgrade the Mundaring Sporting Club.
Liberal candidate for Bullwinkel Matt Moran said the commitment would ensure everyone has access to local high-quality sporting facilities.
“The Mundaring Sporting Club is a hub of local activity, but it is time for an upgrade,” Mr Moran said.
This funding will deliver essential upgrades, including new female change rooms and facilities, so everyone can get involved with grassroots sport in the Perth Hills.
“I’ve heard from many local athletes and sports clubs that the ageing facilities at the Mundaring Sporting Club are holding them back, particularly women’s and girl’s teams, which are growing rapidly,” Mr Moran said.
“This funding is a direct response to the concerns raised by our community. I’m proud to be able to deliver this real and positive change for the Perth Hills.”
Bullwinkel Nationals candidate Mia Davies said members of the club had done a wonderful job in maintaining and expanding their facility throughout the years, but the bathrooms and facilities needed an upgrade to make them accessible and modern for every member.
“The club is a hub for bowls, golf and disc golf, as well as being an important meeting place for locals, but the bathroom facilities do not cater for those in wheelchair or with a disability meaning there are members that are unable to access them when participating in sport or activities,” Ms Davies said.
She said the club recently hosted the 2024 World Team Disc Golf Championship bringing hundreds of people into the community and using the facility.
“Catering for members and growing numbers of visitors is critical for the future of the club.”
Meanwhile, the Coalition government has pledged to provide $500,000 to install CCTV and security lighting at Stirk Park in Kalamunda and a further $66,000 for Mundaring Arena and the outdoor hard courts.
Liberal candidate for Bullwinkel, Matt Moran, said this funding would help ensure people feel safe when they go to play sport at Stirk Park or the Mundaring Arena.
“This funding is a direct response to the concerns raised by the community regarding recent vandalism incidents at Stirk Park and improved
lighting will make this park safer for families, young people and wider community, especially at night,” Mr Moran said.
City of Kalamunda Mayor, Cr Margaret Thomas, welcomed the announcement.
“Our youth keep asking us for more lighting so that they can skate for longer and use the netball courts for longer. People walking back to their homes at night feel unsafe without lighting,” she said.
Mr Moran said he had also heard firsthand from Mundaring residents that safety is a priority.
“We’re responding with practical measures to help make public spaces safer for everyone,” he said.
“This funding will support the installation of CCTV to cover the Mundaring Arena and recreation hard courts so we can stamp out anti-social behaviour and crime.”
In the Swan Valley, the Dutton Liberal government says it will invest $3.1 million to improve mobile coverage for residents, businesses and visitors if elected.
The investment would deliver a new business fibre zone through the NBN, which the Liberal party said would improve connectivity for the 330 businesses and more than 1200 homes in the Swan Valley.
Despite only being 25 minutes from the Perth CBD, business owners, locals, and visitors are plagued by poor phone and internet.
Federal Liberal Communications spokeswoman Melissa McIntosh said the announcement would address connectivity issues for residents in the Swan Valley who had been calling for better mobile coverage.
“Digital connectivity is now an essential part of how we work, learn, stay safe and remain in contact with family and friends,” she said.
“The Liberals will continue to invest in telecommunications infrastructure as part of our plan to strengthen local communities and to get Australia back on track.
“Unfortunately, the Albanese Labor Government has no interest in improving telecommunications in regional, rural and remote Australia demonstrated by their sparse funding commitments and botched closure of the 3G network.”
Liberal candidate for Hasluck David Goode said he was proud to stand with local businesses and the council to advocate for the investment in the Swan Valley.
“It will make a real difference for a community that has fought tirelessly for better telecommunications,’’ he said.
