BULLSBROOK College has a fresh new look with the completion of a striking mural showcasing local native flora and fauna, thanks to a collaborative effort from students, staff and community members.

The large-scale artwork, made possible through a $5000 activation grant from the City of Swan and additional funding from the Bullsbrook College P&C, was completed as part of a community painting event earlier last month

“I first saw the paint-by-numbers mural concept at an event run by the Shire of Gingin in late 2023, and was instantly struck by how well that would translate to a school environment,” Bullsbrook College P&C secretary Kyra Burns said.

“I brought the idea to our P&C team and principal Angela Coghill, who were also on board.

“After evaluating funding options, we were pleased to receive the grant from the City of Swan, and as a P&C, we were able to fund the remaining costs.”

The mural’s design was shaped by input from students and the wider community, who overwhelmingly supported a theme featuring native flora and fauna from the region.

Renowned artist Mel McVee from Melski brought the vision to life, with a remarkable design that includes a female red-tailed black cockatoo, kangaroo, banksia, wattle, kangaroo paws, pink fairy orchids, grass tree flowers, native bluebells, and star guinea flowers.

The artwork also features the silhouettes of three jets as a nod to Pearce air base.

The painting day was held alongside a meet-and-greet night at Bullsbrook College, where parents, students, and staff, along with invited guests, enthusiastically took part in the project.

Under the careful instruction of Tash Alibegovic, the community contributed their artistic efforts, while she dedicated additional time to apply a second coat and final touches in the following days.

Bullsbrook College P&C Association president Shannon Bennett said she was excited about the completion of the project.

“Seeing the beautiful project come to life after more than 12 months in the planning process gives us a sense of joy,” she said.

“To be able to bring the kids, teachers, and wider community together to complete this brings a huge sense of pride, and I hope it will be enjoyed by everyone for years to come, with the mural highlighting the region’s natural beauty.”
