INTERIOR is a curated collection of precious objects exhibiting at Midland Junction Art Centre (MJAC) from November 30.
Featuring homewares and 2D artforms that imbue our lived environments, this contemporary design collection highlights the work of 31 accomplished artists from Western Australia.
The selected artists’ works promote reflection on our interior spaces as we see them both through the curatorial lens, and as desired objects for the domestic setting.
The art-object occupies the liminal space between fine art and design, often resulting in contemplative and subtle forms for our spaces. They may manifest as strikingly bold sculptures that reject function or form or serve as joyously decorative objects, however in both respects they offer a delight for the eyes. They are curated, coveted and collected.
Interior is an opportunity to explore a diverse collection of artwares and design objects celebrating the beauty of how we adorn our homes while championing the importance of supporting the handcrafted market and fostering sustainability for our artists.
These artists excel in their mastery of materials, form, and functionality. They transform raw, traditional applications, found and industrial fabrications into beautiful objects that enhance our everyday lives.
The exhibition is curated in-house by MAC Inc.’s retail manager Kristy Scaddan, a 2021 visual arts graduate from Edith Cowan University, printmaker and emerging curator who brings a trained eye for detail as well as deep respect to artisans and contemporaries alike.
Scaddan expertly balances art and design with the knowledge, connections and insight to curate the intersection where gallery meets retail space. In 2023, she debuted in the curatorial field with Placemarks, Gallery 25, ECU and Hand in Hand, Mundaring Arts Centre and this year with an artists’ book exhibition Unfold, which recently closed at MJAC.
The MAC Inc. shops were established with the objective to support artists in their professional pursuits, while providing visitors to their galleries with the opportunity to acquire exceptional, handcrafted objects from Western Australia.
Interior further expands this mission by inviting artists to explore their practice within the realm of design and serves as a platform for showcasing the narratives behind each piece, which are often overlooked in traditional retail environments.
Featured artists include: Gemma Ben-Ary, Felicity Bodycoat, Sian Boucherd, Helen Clark, Greg Crowe, Jon Denaro, John Eden, Penelope Forlano, Alice Guiness, Louise Hamill, Gabby Howlett, Margaret Dillon & Jesse Lee, Wendy Hubert, Daniel Iley, Cath Inman, Tanya Jaceglav, Sarah Keirle, Robbie Kerr, Ben Kovacsy, Emma Lashmar, Mark Lilly, Coby McDougall, Kate Rae & Kerry O’Flaherty, Chris Reid, Sarah Soulay, Jacob Smith, Jude Taylor, Anne Williams and Michael Woodley.
