TWELVE suburban artists have used their unique artistic styles and imaginings to express the feelings that arise from their situation and existence in suburbia to be featured in an exhibition at Ellenbrook Arts.
The artists from the Collage Art Group invite audiences to engage with suburbia in layered and thoughtful ways.
From early settlements built around survival to today’s complex lifestyle choices, suburbia carries its own language of parks, coastlines, bushland, isolation and community.
As reflected in David Lynch: The Art Life, houses hold unseen stories behind lit or darkened windows and audiences are invited to imagine the scenes that make up a life in these homes.
It presents the idea that people may choose where they live, and it invites viewers to questions whether sub urban undercurrents ultimately shape who they become.
Featuring artists include Alba Cinquini, Anne-Maree Pelusey-Zentner, Carol Rowling, Jenny Demarte, Julie Calabrese, Julie Wilkinson, Kale Miller, Leah Van Lieshout, Marilyn Barrington, Marilyn Davis-Moore, Rosie Manning and Sharron Eves.
Ms Cinquini said these artists have worked in a range of media from pieces in watercolour, acrylic, textiles, organic materials and metal to carvings, installations and projections, and they will be using their range of abilities to explore the idea of suburban life.
“It’s all focusing on everyone’s artistic practice and what formulates as their main topics,” she said.
“There’s quite a mixture as some works are decorative abstract expressionism, others draw on travel, graffiti or everyday suburban elements.
“There will be paintings, and 3D works in there as well exploring the topic.”
The group traces its origins back to 1985, when a core group of artists studied together at Carine TAFE and began organising trips and exhibitions to develop their practice.
The exhibition also marks the group’s first time showing at Ellenbrook Arts, offering a new platform to engage with audiences.
Ms Cinquini said several new works would be on display, alongside select pieces from previous work.
Opening night will be March 27 from 6pm and the exhibition will be running until the end of April 19.
