PLANNED upgrades to the Elsie Austin Oval Pavilion change rooms are progressing following detailed design work by Hodge Collard Preston Architects who have been engaged by the Shire of Mundaring.

The new designs will be based on building concepts developed previously with the community.

The improved facilities at the Mount Helena oval were made possible with a $485,000 investment by the state government and will include upgraded and expanded change rooms, a universal change room/shower, a new umpire’s room and larger storage room, improved kitchen/kiosk and upgraded entrance and surrounding outdoor areas.

All works will comply with modern accessibility requirements to include widened doorways and smooth pathways to increase universal accessibility, as well as lockable cubicles in the female change rooms and LED lighting throughout the building and between the carpark and building.

Of the total investment of $485,000 made by the state government, $410,000 has been allocated through the community sporting and recreation facilities fund (CSRFF), a program administered by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.

The Shire of Mundaring aims to proceed with the upgrades in 2025/26 and is working with community groups to secure further funding for the capital works which are expected to cost around $1.8 million to $2 million.

Kalamunda MLA Matthew Hughes said the upgrade will support the high-profile and successful sports for all that already exists.

“We’ll get comprehensive upgrades to the Elsie Austin Pavilion change rooms where the home clubs have successful, well-promoted and prioritised programs to encourage diverse participation in sports, including the StarKick All Abilities Football Program.”

Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman said the state government was committed to supporting the development of sports and recreation facilities to meet the growing needs of communities.

“These upgraded facilities will improve accessibility for a broader range of community groups to be able to participate in sport and recreation activities and to benefit from a more active lifestyle.

“The CSRFF program continues to provide value to WA communities through its support of local community projects.”
