GROUND has broken at the site of the Brabham District Community Centre, marking the start of the eagerly-awaited facility set to become the community heart of one of the City of Swan’s fastest-growing suburbs.
At the recent sod-turning ceremony, dignitaries and project partners gathered to celebrate the start of the $8.5 million project, planned for completion in October 2026.
The project has been made possible by $3.87m in funding through the federal government’s Thriving Suburbs program.
The centre will feature function halls, meeting rooms, food preparation areas, a storeroom and an external function area, providing a space for residents and community groups to host a wide range of meetings, classes, functions and events.
Situated in the Swan Urban Growth Corridor, Brabham is projected to reach 33,000 residents at full build-out, with the new district community centre designed to meet the needs of this thriving population.
City of Swan Mayor Tanya Richardson said the milestone is a proud moment for the city.
“This is exciting for Brabham, and we are proud to be delivering on our promise to provide a modern, accessible community space for residents to call their own,” she said.
Federal Member for Hasluck Tania Lawrence said she was delighted to see the project starting.
“The Brabham District Community Centre will serve not only Brabham but the fast-developing communities of Dayton, West Swan and Henley Brook,” she said.
“This is a shared space for so many of our wonderful local groups. It is another great example of different levels of government coming together to serve the needs of our growing communities.”
Swan Hills MLA Michelle Maynard who was representing West Swan MLA Rita Saffioti, said she was looking forward to seeing the centre become a major focus for community-based activities in the rapidly growing region.
“Facilities such as the centre perform an essential role in bringing communities closer together,“ she said.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said she was delighted to see the project starting.
“I’m particularly pleased that Federal Government support is helping this project to become a reality, serving the future needs of Brabham and its surrounding suburbs“, she said.
“This is exciting for Brabham, and we are proud to be delivering on our promise to provide a modern, accessible community space for residents to call their own,” she said.
