Heavy vehicle concerns in Kalamunda

The intersection of Sultana and Milner roads has been highlighted as a safety hazard at the September Kalamunda council meeting with the city planning to investigate.

CONCERNS about heavy vehicles navigating residential intersections in High Wycombe were heard at the September ordinary council meeting, with calls for urgent safety improvements.

Resident Jan Maree Cresswell submitted a question highlighting the corner of Sultana Road West and Milner Road, which she said was doubly difficult because of offset streets, traffic islands and frequent semi-trailers transporting long steel beams.

“As a pedestrian and driver, I have seen how the traffic island at the Sultana Road West intersection is poorly designed and facilitates corner-cutting, with close contact with cars on the other side of the road as well as pedestrians,” she said.

Ms Cresswell asked whether the city could request Main Roads to conduct a site assessment.

City of Kalamunda asset services director Sinead McGuire said the city had already corresponded with Main Roads and the issue was under investigation.

“However, we don’t yet know the outcome of that,” she said.

“Our team has also been in contact with developers to remind them not to direct heavy vehicles through this section of the road.

“And just for awareness, it is possible for members of the public to lodge a report through to Main Roads if there’s any evidence of incidents involving heavy vehicles.

“If there is any suspected breach of road rules, we would encourage residents to refer them through to the WA police.

“The city is progressively working through the findings of a road safety audit completed earlier this year and corrective actions for improving signage and lighting is being undertaken on Sultana Road West.”

Ms McGuire said longer-term upgrades included a staged redesign of the Milner–Sultana intersection and the balance of Sultana Road West, which were under consideration.

Updates are expected in February 2026 through the Forrestfield and High Wycombe industrial area stage 1 developer contribution plan review.

As an immediate measure, the city plans to install traffic-calming chicanes on Milner Road (between Stewart and Maida Vale roads) this year to help deter heavy vehicle use.

Councillors acknowledged the concerns, with Mayor Margaret Thomas thanking Ms Creswell for raising the matter.
