THE Plymouth Brethren Christian Church rapid relief team (RRT) has served up a footy feast at the Kalability Sports AFL Carnival in Kalamunda, an event aimed at giving students with disability the opportunity to kick goals and get active.
Despite the wet weather, hundreds of students from Perth and surrounding areas took part in the carnival at Kostera Oval, playing a modified version of AFL that is inclusive of kids of all abilities.
In a statement RRT local team leader Richard Craddock said volunteers served 400 signature burgers to students and staff, keeping them well fed and energised throughout the day.
“The weather may have been grey but RRT’s signature burgers were hot off the grill and greatly appreciated by students and staff as they enjoyed a big day of footy,” he said.
“RRT has supported Kalability for years and really appreciate its approach to empowering students of all abilities, building confidence, connection and inclusion.
“We look forward to continuing our support of this worthwhile initiative, and we loved seeing the joy on all the young faces of those who attend.”
The Kalamunda Secondary Education Support Centre’s (KSESC) Kalability all stars sports program was launched in 2009 to help students in years seven to 13 with a disability get involved in sport with their peers from schools across Western Australia.
As the charitable arm of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, RRT supports frontline workers and emergency services by providing food, donations and other resources, as well as hosting events for the community.
Established in 2013 to assist emergency services in times of disaster and crisis by providing meals and other support, it’s expanded to more than 16,000 volunteers and provides support to the community through charitable donations and events.
