IF you ever wanted to know more about how to grow beautiful local wildflowers in pots then a workshop by the Eastern Hills branch of the Wildflower Society will be of interest.

The workshop will be held on Saturday, April 18 from 10am to 12pm at the Octagonal Hall, 52 McGlew Road, Glen Forrest.

Local wildflowers can make beautiful pot plants, whatever size of garden or space you have.

Learn how to grow them, the types of pots to choose and which plants grow best at this highly interactive, informative and fun talk with local plant and bird enthusiasts Rachel and Mike Green.

While the couple only have a small garden in the Perth Hills they supplement it with more than 190 pots including 76 wicking pots and grow glorious displays of local wildflowers and plants in them.

Their garden featured on ABC TV’s Gardening Australia in August 2025 and in an eight-page spread in Gardening Australia magazine in September.

Their flowers are that good!

“We grow local wildflowers and have had the most success by using wicking pots which have water at the bottom so the plants can suck up water whenever they want it,” Mrs Green said.

“I have found that by putting water meters in them I don’t ever have to guess when the pots need filling and thus we don’t waste water. The flowers are beautiful and grow better in those than in the garden.”

Attendees will discover where to get the plants, the best pots available and where to place them, gain tips on watering, fertilising, propagating and even slug management, and learn what plants or seeds would be good to purchase at the Eastern Hills branch plant sale in May.

All this is supported by beautiful and inspiring photographs and local plant examples, and even a wicking pot demonstration.

Cost is $15 or $10 for Wildflower Society members and to book go to the Humanitix page or email pamela.riordan@gmail.com
