AFTER compiling the history of the Swan SES last year for its 60th anniversary, Melanie Rybka was inspired to create a historical documentary told through the stories of the organisation’s members.
“I developed a deep respect for the past members and their sacrifices,” she said.
Miss Rybka hopes the documentary will recognise those currently in the SES and also bring in new members or reunite old ones.
“I hope to continue their legacy by telling their stories and honour the sacrifices they made,” she said.
“The real-life people who get out of bed at 2am in the pouring rain to help their community.
“The people who pack a bag and travel across the country to assist other communities in need.
“People who give up time with their families to train.”
Throughout her life, Miss Rybka has been involved with the organisation in one way or another.
Today, she is the historical records officer for the organisation, but she is also the daughter of two former members who met at the Swan SES.
“Hearing them (her parents) tell their stories and the way it takes them back has driven me to capture the stories behind the ordinary people who do so much at Swan SES,” Miss Rybka said.
Miss Rybka is calling for previous Swan SES members or anyone who has photos or documentation related to the organisation.
