A beloved Kalamunda rugby community member’s memory was honoured as the team he coached won the evening’s game following a tribute to him.

JOSEPH Tangaroa Simpkins was a loved and respected member and coach of Kalamunda Districts Rugby Union Club, a son, brother, uncle and friend to the wider community.

He was born on May 23, 1996, and passed away on August 11 this year.

The club paid tribute to the life of Mr Simpkins on August 15, before a match where the club’s women’s rugby team, whom Mr Simpkins coached, won against the Wests Scarborough Warriors rugby women’s team.

The club and rugby community members stood in solidarity with the Simpkins family in a Tunnel of Light tribute as they honoured the memory of Mr Simpkins.

The club released a statement saying Mr Simpkins was a true Kala man.

“He played juniors through to premier grade and while rehabbing a knee injury he had been coaching our U15 and KalaKweenz,” the club said.

“Always around the Bull Pen with a smile, his kindness, infectious laugh and amazing gift for bringing people together for a good old yarn will be sorely missed.

“He was the loyalest of loyal friends and loved and respected in the Kala and wider rugby community. His loss leaves the biggest hole in the hearts of many.

“Our hearts go out to Aunty Toni, Peter, Charli, Paris, Macey, Cruz, Chace, Blair and all the extended family as they come to terms with this enormous loss.”

Mr Simpkin’s family also shared a statement which praised his personable and giving nature.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joseph,” they said.

“Cherished son, treasured brother, adored uncle and best friend to all. He had a unique ability to make everyone feel loved.

“His passion for people and rugby was a testament to his character, reflecting his belief in giving back to the community that supported him.

“He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

“His spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched, and his legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire us all.”
