CITY of Kalamunda and WA Police have joined forces to tackle the pressing issue of homelessness within the community.
Forrestfield Police Station officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Brad Robinson and City of Kalamunda Mayor Margaret Thomas are spearheading the collaborative initiative aimed at providing both immediate relief and long-term solutions for those experiencing homelessness.
“Homelessness is a complex social issue that requires significant cooperation between government and non-government organisations (NGOs). In a prosperous state like ours, it can be difficult to fathom that someone could be without a home,” Snr Sgt Robinson said.
“However, it's a reality we must address with both legal enforcement and compassion. We are working closely with the City of Kalamunda, businesses and various organisations to explore all options and implement effective solutions.
“The city is dedicated to working alongside WA Police and other agencies to ensure that we provide not just temporary relief, but also long-term strategies that address the root causes of homelessness,” Kalamunda Mayor Margaret Thomas said.
“By engaging the community and fostering partnerships, we can create a supportive environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”
The initiative focuses on establishing strong partnerships between local government, NGOs and businesses to create a coordinated approach to homelessness.
Engaging the community through awareness programs and volunteer opportunities is also a key element, aiming to foster a supportive environment for those experiencing homelessness.
Immediate relief efforts include providing temporary housing solutions such as shelters or crisis accommodation centres, while ensuring access to comprehensive healthcare, including mental health services, for homeless individuals. Outreach programs are being developed to connect homeless individuals with necessary services and support.
Both WA Police and the City of Kalamunda are committed to upholding local laws, criminal laws, and health department regulations while maintaining a compassionate approach towards individuals experiencing homelessness. They are also examining successful strategies from other regions to guide their efforts and improve outcomes.
For those experiencing homelessness or anyone looking to help, numerous agencies offer online support. The Department of Communities Office of Homelessness provides valuable information and resources.
