THE City of Kalamunda is seeking more than $5 million in external funding to deliver two major road upgrades aimed at improving safety and traffic flow across key routes.

Council is applying through the Metropolitan Regional Roads Group (MRRG) for works on Canning Road and the Welshpool Road East-Lewis Road intersection, with construction funding targeted for the 2027/2028 financial year.

Mayor Margaret Thomas said the projects were part of the city’s long-term transport planning and designed to address ongoing issues on heavily used roads.

“These projects are strongly aligned with our long-term transport planning and are focused on improving safety, easing congestion and supporting the efficient movement of people and goods,” she said.

Design and service relocation planning for both projects is already underway, with construction to be delivered in stages if funding is approved.

The city said staging the works would help minimise disruption to residents and road users, with advance notice to be provided ahead of any construction.

The upgrades are expected to improve road conditions, increase traffic capacity, and enhance overall network efficiency, particularly on routes that carry significant traffic volumes.

Both Canning Road and the Welshpool Road East-Lewis Road intersection have been identified as key regional connections, with the proposed works aiming to address long-standing safety concerns and improve reliability for commuters.

The MRRG program provides funding support for projects that improve road safety and performance, with local governments required to seek council endorsement before submitting applications.

If successful, the city would receive funding for up to two-thirds of the total project costs, with the remaining amount to be covered by council.

Council will consider endorsing the funding application as part of its upcoming decision-making process.
