AFTER months of uncertainty, the iconic Kookaburra Cinema in Mundaring is set to reopen on November 21 under new community ownership, marking a fresh chapter for the beloved outdoor venue.

Former operator Peter Foyster had run the cinema for a decade and confirmed the property was sold to community-based not-for-profit group the Kookaburra collaborative inc. that planned to keep the venue for the community.

“The new operators are planning to run it as a community-based cinema, which is exactly what I was hoping for,” he said. “It really belongs to the community now.”

He said the handover had been “a bit stressful,” with plenty of logistics to finalise, from updating film bookings to teaching the new team how to prepare screenings.

“I thought once it was sold I could relax, but I’m busier than ever making sure the transition goes smoothly,” he said.

Mr Foyster said the response from patrons had been overwhelmingly positive.

“Wherever I go, people are saying how great it is that the Kookaburra’s reopening,” he said. “It’s been a very warm reaction.”

Though ready to pass on the reins, Mr Foyster said it felt strange to let go of the venue he had operated for so long.

“It’s bittersweet. I’ll miss the regulars, but it’s good to know it’s in safe hands. The new group is really excited, and it’s great for the community that Kookaburra will keep going.”
