THE Forever Project and Mary’s Mount Primary School are inviting people in the Perth Hills community to take part in a free firewise gardening workshop at the school, this Saturday, October 19.
In the workshop, participants will be shown how to design and build a firewise garden, as the finish touches are put on Mary’s Mount’s new school garden.
The garden has been constructed by students, with the help of staff from the Forever Project.
Firewise gardening is designed to slow the spread of out-of-control fires and is an easy step to create both a low-maintenance garden and keep your home safer as WA enters the warmer months and the start of bushfire season.
While changing gardening habits and designs will not stop a raging bushfire, having a firewise garden can help keep homes and properties safe.
All plants can be fuel for a fire, so the idea is to keep those fuel sources clear of houses or sheds, and to limit the amount of extra fuel sources dead leaves and dropped branches plants in your garden will produce.
More strategies included in firewise gardening include planting more sparsely to allow clear access to paths and defendable space for firefighting and using native plants which are more fire resilient.
More tips for constructing your own firewise garden will be shared at the workshop.
The event will run from 2pm to 3pm.
