TWO members of Mundaring Seniors were awarded life membership at the group’s annual general meeting on August 20.

Members Enid Pierrot and Mary Ball have, together, given more than two decades of service across committee, bowls and social activities and were recognised at their most recent meeting.

Newly elected president Ross Biddle presented each woman’s history before awarding their medallions and flowers.

Long-time member Max Williams said both members were “very deserving of this recognition.”

Mrs Pierrot’s association with the seniors stretches back to the early 2000s, though she first appeared in club results in 2002 in a mixed fours competition.

She became a board member in 2008, stepped up as vice president in 2009 to 2010, and from 2010 served an 11-year term as secretary.

Mrs Pierrot also acted as secretary-treasurer in 2020–2021, during the height of Covid-19, when it was difficult to keep the club functioning and members connected.

Altogether, she served 13 years on the management committee.

Her time covered the period when Mundaring Seniors changed their name from Mundaring and Districts Senior Citizens Association, and the Shire of Mundaring took over the Hub of the Hills.

She also typed up the club’s current rules, adopted in 2018, which remain in use today.

As a bowler, Mrs Pierrot built a strong reputation, winning triples championships in 2012 and 2018, pairs in 2012, 2020 and 2023, and fours in 2018.

Her achievements followed an earlier highlight in 2002 when her team placed third in the Australian Pensioners Insurance Agency trophy.

Mrs Pierrot recently resigned from bowling due to declining health.

She could not attend the AGM, but her daughter Lisa Duffield accepted her life membership medallion and bouquet on her behalf.

Mary Ball joined Mundaring Seniors in 2009 at age 67 after shoulder surgery made outdoor bowls difficult.

She turned to indoor bowls, quickly became a regular competitor, and earned trophies for the fours championship in 2013 and triples championship in 2014.

In 2023 and 2024 she was bowls captain, only stepping aside for more surgery.

Her committee service stretches back to 2010, when she joined as a board member.

The following year she became social secretary, a role she carried until 2022, when she was widely known as the “guru organiser” of club outings.

Her work included orchestrating the seniors’ 50th anniversary in 2021, which went ahead despite the disruptions from the pandemic.

She rejoined the committee in 2023 and continues to serve today and recalled many highlights of her organising work.

One was a St Patrick’s Day function with an Irish music band at the Woodbridge Hotel.

Another was a tongue-in-cheek cemetery tour through Bakers Hill, Clackline and Wooroloo, with past members Des Ashman and Madge Sermon providing comic commentary.

Other favourites included a Sunday afternoon concert near Armadale where the bus ran out of petrol on the way home, and a recent pub museum visit in Gidgegannup.

She also pointed to the group’s Christmas in July celebration at the Commercial Pub in Midland, where locals asked to join the seniors’ bingo session.

Mr Biddle said both women had made invaluable contributions.

“Each of them has been at the heart of our club,” he said.

“Whether keeping us going through difficult times or bringing members together for celebrations, they have left a lasting mark on Mundaring Seniors.”
