A FREE annual community event in celebration of NAIDOC was held at Weeip Park, Midland last week.

Indigo Junction Chief Executive Officer Sharon Gough said the event celebrated the rich ongoing culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

“It was a hugely successful day attended by many members of the Aboriginal community,” Ms Gough said.

“There was live music, traditional dancers, competitions, awards, children’s activities, stalls and food trucks.

“I was so pleased to see such a good turnout and a beautiful celebration of Aboriginal culture.”

She said Indigo Junction had worked hard to go out into the community and encourage people to make an investment in the event and help the community.

City of Swan Mayor Tanya Richardson said she wanted to thank all of the community members and sponsors who contributed to last week’s event.

“It was fantastic to see such a great turnout,” Ms Richardson said.

“The City of Swan is privileged to have a strong Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population – one of the largest in the Perth metropolitan area.

“We’re proud to acknowledge our connections and collaborative work through projects, initiatives and events, like Midland NAIDOC, to recognise and support our diverse community.”

The event was organised by Midland NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) and Indigo Junction together with Karlup.

Popular television identity Ernie Dingo also attended with his family.

Sponsors included Landgate, Mission Australia, Holyoake, Swan Communities for Children, Parkerville Children and Youth Care, St John of God Midland and the City of Swan.
