THE Great Eastern Highway in Midland has been named the second most dangerous road in the state, according to a driving report by AAMI.

The insurer used the past decade’s crash claims to inform the Decade of Driving Report which determined the rankings.

AAMI’s crash index page revealed this was not the first time Midland’s Great Eastern Highway has claimed a top 10 spot in the crash index rankings.

“In the past decade, it came in at number two five times, and number one in 2020,” it read.

“With the Midland Gate shopping centre nearby, traffic is in no short supply.

Midland’s Great Eastern Highway was tied at fourth spot with South Perth’s Kwinana Freeway the previous year for Perth’s most dangerous roads, and took out second place in 2022 as well.

A spokesperson for Main Roads said the majority of the crashes along Great Eastern Highway in Midland involved property damage.

“In the five years to December 31, 2023, there was a total of 443 crashes on Great Eastern Highway in Midland, from William Street to Ferguson Street,” they said.

“Of these, none were fatal.

“355, 80.2 per cent, involved property damage only, 78, or 17.6 per cent, required medical attention and 10, or 2.3 per cent, required hospitalisation.”

This was in line with the data collected by the driving report, which showed nose-to-tail collisions made up 23 per cent of claims.

The stretch of road fell short of being the most dangerous road in WA, with Cannington’s Albany Highway holding onto the number one spot of nine years in the past decade.

Farrall Road in Midvale was also identified as one of Perth’s riskiest roads through a survey, as reported in Midvale road is one of Perth’s riskiest.
