MIDLAND not-for-profit organisation Midland’s Women’s Health Care Place (MWHCP) turned 30 in August, celebrating three decades of community support for women and a new name for the organisation.

The organisation, now named ERICA Women’s Centre, was born through the hope to create a safe, welcoming space in Midland where women could access support, information and care.

The initiative began in 1994 after funding was secured from the eastern region community development council and a year later, the centre was officially opened at its first home on Railway Parade.

Midland artist Jude Taylor designed the logo, and it was under the beacon that was the original design that the centre became a cornerstone of the community.

Women visited for reasons ranging from emotional counselling and received outreach from the sexual assault resource centre, to support groups on postnatal depression and domestic violence.

After operating on Railway Parade for two years, the centre moved in 1997 to Morrison Road and again to 24 Junction Parade nine years after that.

The Val Ferguson Centre was opened following a traditional smoking ceremony and a sod-turning by the late Mayor Charlie Gregorini and the then MWHCP chairperson Val Ferguson.

“Thirty years is a milestone, but it is also just the beginning,” ERICA Women’s Centre chief executive officer Linda Malone said.

“We will continue to listen, respond, and create a future where every woman has access to the support, safety, and opportunities she deserves.”

The new name ERICA is an acronym based on their organisational values of empowerment, respect, inclusion, courage and authenticity.

ERICA Women’s Centre board chairperson Anna Schwartz said the organisation celebrated the renewal of their commitment to every woman who needed support in healing and growing life skills.

“We celebrate not just a new name, but a renewed commitment to every woman who comes through our doors.” she said.

“With ERICA Women’s Centre, we move forward with courage, conviction, and character.

“Together, we continue to strive to make a difference.”

An Erica Women’s Centre spokesperson said the organisation provides comfortable, caring, and inclusive services for all women aged 16 and over in Perth’s east metropolitan area

“Our primary service is affordable one-to-one counselling, offered on a sliding scale of $15-$40 per session, ensuring accessibility for women from all walks of life,” they said.

“In addition, we deliver a diverse range of programs and workshops, offering a safe and welcoming entry point for health promotion, education, skills development, fitness, and community engagement.”
