THE Mundaring town centre is once again showcasing the creativity of students and artists from the area in their 36th year of displaying Mundaring Christmas tree project art installations.

The 5m tree was unveiled at the Mundaring Shire Council Building on Tuesday, indicating the start of Birak, the First Nations season of the young.

The project is an annual collaboration between the Mundaring Arts Centre (MAC), Shire of Mundaring and local primary schools as reported in Christmas tree project an annual showcase.

This year, more than 100 students from Darlington Primary School expressed their imagination and cheer, decorating nearly three hundred recycled canvas leaves for the Shire of Mundaring tree.

This year’s tree has been adorned with stars, planets and galaxies, to embody the magic of the festive season.

Student creations were led by Mundaring illustrator Dion Hamill, Mundaring Arts Centre’s jewellery and ceramics designer Alida Cappalletta, printmaking specialist Lauren Gissing, and Darlington Primary arts and science teacher Michael Smith.

Mr Hamill said the students did a great job in decorating the tree with canvases featuring their handmade art.
“Great job to all the students at Darlington Primary School involved in this year’s Christmas tree decorations for the Shire of Mundaring,” he said.

“This year’s theme was the solar system and over 100 students completed more than 350 canvases to produce some absolutely stunning artwork to decorate the tree.

“There were comets, planets, stars and even a few out of this world creatures made by the students.

“Alida, Lauren and I had a blast working with you and your very cool teacher Mr Smith.

“Thanks again for having us come to your school and thanks to the staff at Mundaring Arts Centre for putting this all together.”

Darlington Primary students from Years 2-5 took part in drop-in arts workshops where they were invited to illustrate their interpretation of the solar system, the theme chosen for this year’s project.

Celebrating the universal wonder of the cosmos, transcending borders, cultures and traditions, the theme aimed to reflect inclusion, shared curiosity and the togetherness of the season.
