GIDGEGANNUP Men’s Shed (GMS) has received a $576,316 Lotterywest grant for the construction of a purpose-built workshop and trailer garage.

The grant was announced earlier this month with a special presentation of a Lotterywest grant certificate by Swan Hills MLA Jessica Shaw.

The new facility will create a permanent, supportive, and inclusive environment for both men and women, offering a range of workshop and leisure activities, community events, and services.

The workshop is set to become a vital community hub for Gidgegannup and surrounding areas, fostering social interactions, skill-sharing, and community networking.

“The men’s shed plays a crucial role in addressing social isolation and mental health challenges prevalent among residents and provides a welcoming space where individuals can connect, share experiences, and collaborate on projects,” GMS president Andrew Brine said.

“By promoting mental well-being and offering opportunities for members to learn new skills, the GMS has become especially important for those affected by the 2021 Wooroloo bushfire, with many members reporting improvements in their sense of belonging and mental health,” he said.

GMS contributes to community resilience through the provision of essential services, vocational courses, and partnerships with other organisations for community workshops and emergency preparedness initiatives.

The facility will also be fully accessible, catering to individuals with disabilities and seniors, and welcoming men and women over the age of 18.

“The new facility aligns perfectly with the Lotterywest ‘inclusive thriving community investment framework’, which emphasises the importance of community belonging and increased participation,” Mr Brine said.

“The Gidgegannup Men’s Shed project serves as a powerful testament to the strength of community collaboration. With its new facility, the Gidgegannup community stands to benefit immensely for many years to come.”

“This grant of $576,316 represents the culmination of years of planning and community effort,” he said.

During the event, which was attended by many contributors, GMS expressed heartfelt gratitude to Lotterywest and the Labor state government for their vital support.
