AT the annual Australia Games, high school students competed in a range of sports, from AFL to cross country, with teams formed from schools all over the state.
Echo News talked to three competitors following the tournament.
Marcus Menara, who has been playing soccer since the age of five, said representing his state has opened doors to play in Australian teams and travel overseas.
“I play a sport that I love and that I’m passionate about. I’m constantly meeting new team mates and being coached by new coaches, so I’m always learning new skills on and off the pitch,” he said.
The team finished the carnival with a bronze medal, winning three of their five games and drawing against NSW in their final game.
Lloyd Browne and Axel Walsh played on the WA boys’ AFL team, which went on to win gold at the carnival.
Both boys said they have always loved AFL and have been playing since they were in AusKick.
“I just love it all. Just playing the game is the best thing in the world, I love working as a team with my teammates, creating friendships and playing the sport I love,” Lloyd said.
Axel agreed, saying the relationships formed with a team and support crew were the best part of a tournament.
“Although it is great having big wins and going to these great tournaments the connection and relationships is what allows that success to happen,” he said.
The team won the grand final game against Victoria, taking home the gold medal.
Axel said he couldn’t go past winning the tournament for his biggest highlight.
“The feeling of winning with such a great group of boys and coaching staff is unreal, and just makes the travel worth it every bit. Knowing that all the work you and your team put in has paid off is a great feeling, even better against the Victorians,” he said.
Lloyd said taking out the top honour wouldn’t have been possible without the team’s support crew.
“Thanks to all our coaches, physios and other staff that made it amazing, they made so many sacrifices for us which led us to have a brilliant carnival. We couldn’t have had a better squad,” he said.
“All our parents made such a financial commitment as well and I will be forever grateful for all of their support. Without all of this support bringing home the gold never would’ve happened. Honestly the most exciting experience of my entire life.”
