THE fifth annual Brabham NAIDOC family fun day is on Saturday July 11 at Honeycomb Park in Brabham.

This year’s theme is ‘50 Years of Deadly’ and marks the milestone 50th anniversary of the annual event.

There will be a vibrant program including Welcome to Country, a smoking ceremony, flag raising, traditional dance performances, live entertainment, cultural workshops, community stalls, children’s activities, interactive cultural experiences and bush tucker tastings.

According to City of Swan co-organiser Karen Hayden, the event will offer many meaningful opportunities for the community to engage with and celebrate Aboriginal culture.

“There is also free coffee and ice cream for the first 100 people attending and entertainment including the Aboriginal dance group Midn Marr, a Noongar phrase that translates to ‘dreaming’ in English,” Ms Hayden said.

“Led by Neil Coyne the group actively performs and teaches Noongar culture, language, and dance to schools, colleges and the wider community.

“The Brett Dimer band will also perform some country favourites and there will be local Aboriginal groups with pop up stalls.”

Supported by Karlup Aboriginal Corporation, Indigo Junction, the City of Swan, Peet Limited and local community organisations, the free event will recognise the strength, resilience, achievements and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples.

The all ages event is on Saturday, July 11 from 10am to 2pm at Honeycomb Park, Sideslip Street, Brabham.
