SUPPORT continues to grow for a proposed dog exercise area in Swan View, with 192 residents signing a petition led by local dog owner Greg Ross.

Mr Ross said the response from the community has been enthusiastic and he is hopeful the City of Swan will approve the exercise area.

“I have a gut feeling the interest and approval of dog owners is really strong,” he said.

“Since late February we’ve grown the Swan View Dog Owners Community Facebook group to more than 300 members and we’ve already had close to 200 signatures on the petition.”

As of August 6, the petition on change.org had 192 verified signatures.

The petition proposes Natham Square in Swan View as a preferred site due to its quiet surrounds, existing water supply and ample shaded space suitable for fencing off designated areas for large, small and reactive dogs.

According to Mr Ross, Natham Square would provide a more accessible and safer location than other sites under consideration, including land adjacent to the Morrison Road shopping centre.

He said the support of deputy mayor Ian Johnson and councillor Sarah Howlett has been encouraging, and he has met with local Labor MP Steve Catania to discuss the proposal further.

In Swan residents call for dog exercise area, Mr Ross said properly designed dog parks should separate small and large dogs and be fully enclosed.

He believes that a well-planned facility at Natham Square could serve dog owners across Swan View, Stratton and Jane Brook.

“Most people work, and kids are at school, so having to drive all the way to Whiteman Park or Bayswater can take an hour,” he said.
