SEEING his close friends lose family members due to mental illness inspired Swan resident Ryan Barron to raise funds for Beyond Blue this March.
Mr Barron will be running every day to highlight the importance of mental health awareness.
Suicide is the leading cause of death for people aged 15-44, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
When Mr Barron discovered this fact, he said the effort to address the issue wasn’t good enough considering it is largely preventable.
“Beyond Blue directly helps treat and manage people suffering with anxiety, depression and suicide,” he said.
“So, I thought they were the best fit for the cause.”
As a physiotherapist and fitness coach, Mr Barron said he has witnessed firsthand the important role of movement and exercise in maintaining mental resilience and mental health.
Throughout the week, Mr Barron runs mostly in the Swan area and said his favourite area was Whiteman Park.
“It’s beautiful running in the early morning, listening to, and experiencing nature.”
Mr Barron said some days are harder to wake up and get out the door, but he said this campaign isn’t just for him.
“It’s for the ones we’ve loved and lost,” he said.
“I think having a purpose bigger than yourself, is one of the key drivers to fulfilment and improving consistency in training and in life.
“We’ll always do more for other people than we do for ourselves.”
Mr Barron hopes this initiative will spark conversations and generate awareness on the importance of mental health.
“If this movement encourages one person to reach out for help, start running or makes them realise they are not alone, then that is mission accomplished.”
