TRILLION Trees in Hazelmere is among the eight community projects across the state recently promised additional funding as part of an Australia Post grants program.
Trillion Trees Australia received an Australia Post Community Grant for their Lunch and Learn series.
Lunch and Learn is a series of community lunches for the Trillion Trees volunteer community where they can share a healthy, nutritious lunch and hear from a community expert in native fauna, flora or conservation.
The workshops aim to provide nutritious meals and connection alongside interaction with nature to improve wellbeing and mental health outcomes.
Trillion Trees chief executive officer Mark Hullet said over half of the organisation’s volunteers are over 60 and around 20 per cent live with a disability and are at higher risk of the social isolation linked to poor health outcomes.
“This grant will allow us to strengthen volunteer engagement and build stronger social connections within our volunteer community,” he said.
“Sharing food and information by bringing inspiring guest speakers to our volunteer community is also a small way to show our gratitude for the dedication of our volunteers, who help us to deliver our mission across our community nursery, restoration and education programs.
“Boosting the wellbeing of our volunteer team and building their social connections ensures they feel valued and continue to volunteer with enthusiasm.”
Mr Hullet said the grant was graciously received and went a long way to building a healthier and happier community.
“Huge thanks to Australia Post for providing grants like this which help to build community, boost volunteering and strengthen the social fabric of Australia,” he said.
“Our organisation is proudly powered by volunteers and it is great to be able to deliver these Lunch and Learn sessions for them.”
Each week 120 regular volunteers attend the Trillion Trees Community Nursery in Hazelmere, helping to propagate 200,000 native trees each year.
Many volunteers also assist the charity with tree planting, community events and nature care activities.
The October Lunch and Learn session will be nature journaling with Sue Hauri Downing on Monday, October 26.
Australia Post 2026 Community Grants program aims to support mental wellbeing and community connection with more than $72,000 committed.
