ST John of God Health Care (SJGHC) has been honoured with three awards at the AMA (WA)’s 2025 Awards night, reflecting its commitment to junior doctor wellbeing and career development.
SJGHC chief medical officer David McCoubrie said receiving the Health Service Provider of the Year Award is recognition of its People First culture and focus on valuing the experience of doctors in training.
“We offer junior doctors outstanding opportunities to learn and be mentored in teams, while providing holistic, person-centered care at a leading health care organisation,” he said.
SJGHC general manager medical workforce and education Dr Jemma Hogan received the peer-nominated junior doctor of the year (Dr Camille Michener Legacy Award).
Dr Hogan also facilitates leadership and governance education for junior doctors at St John of God Midland Hospital.
SJGHC consultant aged care and rehabilitation Dr Maria Foundas received the peer-nominated DHASWA Champion of the year (Jonathan Morling Legacy Award) for doing the most to champion the cause of doctors’ and medical student health in Western Australia.
Dr Foundas, a senior geriatrician at St John of God Midland Hospital, is highly regarded by her colleagues for her leadership, compassion, and commitment to the wellbeing of junior doctors, from their commencement as interns, and moving into their roles as junior doctor, and also manages the intern wellbeing program at the Midland hospital focused on sharing concerns and problem-solving through group and individual talking sessions.
“I welcome the opportunity to shine a light on the important topic of junior doctor wellbeing. Being a doctor is an immense privilege but often comes with great responsibilities and challenges,” Dr Foundas said.
