ASHFIELD residents have launched a petition calling for four water bubblers to be installed at Ashfield Reserve.

Petition creator and Ashfield resident Zoe Warwick said she started the petition to provide more public access to water at the reserve.

“They do a statewide soccer program there, and as fantastic an effort as the parents and the coordinators do of cleaning things up, inevitably there are always plastic bottles and lids the following day,” Ms Warwick said.

“I know that the Town of Bassendean has a real commitment and desire to have sustainability. They do their best to live within those principles like being plastic free, yet on the weekends at Ashfield Reserve, there’s all these plastic bottles that are being used and discarded.”

A drinking-water fountain is available near the public toilets on the Colstoun Road side of Ashfield Reserve.

A Town of Bassendean spokesperson said there is also a fountain near Fisher Street, but it is currently out of order.

“While initially it was assumed the repair would be straightforward, unfortunately that is not the case and the town’s contract plumber continues to determine the cause,” they said.

“Within the last two weeks, the town has provided a dog bowl connected to the existing tap on the shed that’s located approximately midway between Colstoun Road and Fisher Street on the old sealed fire track.”

The spokesperson also said the town currently has no plans to install additional fountains.

“The number of drinking-water facilities at the reserve is equal to or greater than at other similar reserves within the town based on reserve size and usage,” they said.

“Installation of additional water fountains would require additional connections to the Water Corporation and a significant amount of new infrastructure at considerable cost would be required.”

Ms Warwick hopes to present the petition to council once she gains around 300 to 400 signatures.

“I have received more support than I thought. A lot of people have said that it is a good idea and have thanked me for getting the ball rolling,” she said.

“There really should be more access to water down here. It gets really hot. I hate to see what our summer is going to be like without accessible water at the reserve.”
