THE state government is backing National Electric Motor Services (NEMS) to deliver a state-of-the-art wind energy manufacturing facility in Malaga.
NEMS will receive $500,000 through the wind energy manufacturing co-investment program, supporting the business to refurbish and service wind turbine generators locally.
The facility will reduce reliance on international service providers and improve turnaround times for wind farm operators who currently are required to ship their repair works overseas.
The funding will assist NEMS to expand its current capabilities to heavy lifting and handling, automated high-capacity testing, thermal processing, and advanced quality assurance systems for the wind energy sector.
The program offers up to 50 per cent of eligible project costs and industry partners are required to match the level of funds and has provided more than $5.5 million in co-investment, stimulating investment of more than $14m into the local wind energy sector.
Previous recipients of the program are Australian Winders, Turbine Solutions, RCR Mining Technologies and CamCo Engineering.
WA currently has 25 large wind farms which are scheduled for development over the coming decades, with some projects above 1 gigawatt in scale.
Manufacturing Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said the program was about putting WA first and supporting the growing wind energy sector, while creating quality local manufacturing jobs.
