YORK has been named one of Airbnb’s top 50 Tiny Towns in their new ‘tiny towns guide’ released last week.

The guide showcases 50 charming Aussie towns with populations under 3000 people in a bid to drive regional travel, with York hitting fourth spot.

It comes as new research from YouGov reveals ‘tiny town tourism’ is in demand, yet some of Australia’s best small towns could be flying under the radar.

Findings show that nearly 80 percent of Aussies are interested in visiting a small town they’ve never been to before like York, but one in three assume there’s a lack of viable accommodation options.

Small towns with big personalities and unique charm are flying under the radar with 40 percent of Aussies having never heard of even one of the top 10 tiny towns on the list.

This includes York, with a population of 2400 residents, with only 24 percent of Aussies aware of the town, despite it being one of the most recognisable towns on the list, and that 48 per cent of travellers are attracted to heritage sites, and 37 per cent opting for art and cultural experiences.

As part of a commitment to boost tourism in regional communities, Airbnb has also partnered with local community organisation, The Shire of York Festival, to donate a $30,000 Tiny Town grant to support their efforts to attract more visitors and foster community spirit.

York is promoted in the guide as a great destination for history buffs, nature lovers and anyone looking to experience the charm of an historic Australian town, with its well-known and well-preserved historical architecture like the York Courthouse, the Old York Mill and St. Patrick's Cathedral, along with the York Motor Museum and regular fresh produce Saturday markets.
