MIDLAND basketball player Christine Blurton is raising money to attend the Asia Pacific Cup in Singapore.

Ms Blurton will represent Midland-based not-for-profit Indigenous youth organisation Binar at the tournament.

The 15-year-old was selected to participate in the event based on her strong leadership qualities and commitment.

“I found out about it when I was down at basketball,” Ms Blurton said.

“It was told to me secretly then as it is invite only. I was just very shocked.

“And because I couldn’t tell anyone yet, I had to try and like hold my reaction in, but as soon as I got home, I was just so happy.”

Ms Blurton’s mother, Melody Bolton, said the family was excited about the opportunity, but their current financial situation was making it difficult to afford the trip.

“I didn’t realise how much it would be. We have to pay for the flights, food and other travel arrangements such as getting Christine a passport,” Ms Bolton said.

Ms Bolton started a GoFundMe campaign online for her daughter and is hoping to raise $3200.

Ms Blurton is hoping this opportunity will open doors for her future.

“I’m hoping that it would help me grow,” she said.

“I really want to work for Binar in the future as a mentor.

“I really want to help the younger kids through coaching or helping them refine their skills.”

Ms Bolton said she hoped their journey could inspire others to pursue similar opportunities.

“Christine and I don’t come from a particularly well-off family, so I hope people can see us and see that it is possible – that they can aspire to do things like this themselves and stick with it because eventually it will pay off.”

The Asia Pacific Cup will take place in October and will feature teams from 17 countries.
