THIS July, The Zig Zag Gallery will host Kaaditj, the first solo exhibition by Noongar and Yamatji photographer and sculptor Wesley Jackson.
Presented as part of the City of Kalamunda’s 2026 NAIDOC week program, the event features Mr Jackson as Kalamunda’s NAIDOC Emerging Artist of 2026.
The exhibition title comes from the Noongar word meaning to understand, know, listen, or hold knowledge, reflecting the artist’s focus on understanding cultural knowledge and history.
The multi-medium display uses photography and sculpture to look back at the past through a personal and cultural lens.
The collection of work will be displayed in three distinct chapters titled Life, Destruction, and Regrowth, to guide viewers through a deliberate artistic narrative.
The chapters will trace the deep relationship between people and land, the disruption caused by culture being suppressed, and the renewal and reclaiming of knowledge carried forward.
Fire will feature heavily throughout the display, shown both as a symbol and as a practical tool used in traditional land management and bush regeneration.
Visitors to the gallery can expect to see a diverse range of physical art, including framed photographic prints alongside sculptural pieces.
Mr Jackson’s previous works have been displayed in various group exhibitions, print media, and government buildings across Western Australia.
The exhibition is free to attend and runs from Saturday, July 4 to Sunday, July 26 at 50 Railway Road, Kalamunda.
The gallery is open from 9am to 4pm on weekdays, and 10am to 4pm on weekends and public holidays.
