CONSUMER Protection is asking tenants to share their experiences with rental bonds, as well as their thoughts on the information available on the Consumer Protection website and how they prefer to receive information about bonds.

Consumer Protection revealed to Echo News that the number of unclaimed bonds from tenants in the City of Swan, Kalamunda, Shires of Mundaring, Northam and Toodyay were 412.

These unclaimed bonds currently held in the bonds system from the period of January 1 to October of this year came to a total of $386,520.44.

There was a total of 90 complaints from the areas listed from January to October of 2025.

The survey push aims to use feedback to help Consumer Protection identify any issues and guide improvements to make the information more transparent and easier to use.

A Consumer Protection spokesperson said the government body was always looking at ways to improve the way information was communicated with tenants.

“Moving in or out of a rental home can be stressful so that’s why we want to make our information clear, simple, and easy to understand,” they said.

“We particularly want to hear about experiences with rental bonds processes and how tenants prefer to receive information about bonds.

“We know that when tenants leave a rental, they often need their bond quickly for a new rental, and we’re keen to hear about how our team can make that transition smoother.

“Feedback we get from tenants will help us understand where challenges with bonds release exists as we know this is a common area for complaints.”

The City of Swan’s tenants lodged the most complaints about bond release with Consumer Protection at 58 complaints to date this year when compared to neighbouring local government areas.

This is followed by the City of Kalamunda at 19 complaints, Shire of Mundaring at eight and the shires of Northam and Toodyay at two and three complaints respectively.

No complaints from York, Beverley, or Goomalling local government areas had been recorded by Consumer Protection as of October 2025.

The Consumer Protection rental bonds survey portal will accept submissions about rental bond experiences until October 31.
