IN the SSN grand final West Coast Fever played their hearts out until the final whistle to fall short by one-goal 58-59 against Melbourne Vixens.

In front of a record 15,013 fans, Rod Laver Arena was packed with members of the Green Army from far and wide to support the athletes in green.

Nerves were felt across both teams in the opening minutes with the Vixens Sophie Garbin taking the first goal.

Kadie-Ann Dehaney flexed her muscles with a rebound off a Garbin miss joining the intense pressure of Sunday Aryang of Midland.

Both sides were goal for goal until Fever managed to force a turnover off a Vixens centre pass and were able to put themselves ahead.

In her usual dominant style, Alice Teague-Neeld took her 3000th centre pass receive in the first quarter.

A super shot from Kiera Austin put the Vixens 17-16 ahead at quarter time.

The Vixens continued to show strength in the second quarter.

A deflection from Dehaney turned into a gain from Jordan Cransberg, with her goal assists pivotal to translate ball into Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard.

The Vixens defensive game plan with Rudi Ellis and Jo Weston double teaming Fowler-Nembhard, Shanice Beckford provided a great option under goal, with four for the first half.

Fever trailed by two at half time with the score 33-31.

Beckford kicked off the second half with a deflection off the Vixens first Centre Pass.

Aryang continued to be an absolute gun with another deflection, one of her three for the quarter.

Fowler-Nembhard continued to be strong under the post and scored her 7000th goal in the Suncorp Super League but the Vixens were in front 48-43 at the end of the third quarter.

In what was nothing but a heart stopping final quarter, Fever fought with everything they had.

Olivia Wilkinson made impact with both goals and assists, with two goals to her name in the final quarter.

Dehaney was a machine in defence, stealing both rebounds and deflections in a mammoth effort.

In the final seconds, with a goal the difference, it was the Vixens who prevailed.
