LESMURDIE resident and Mazenod College Year 10 student Lane Thalmann has won gold at the International Cheer Union (ICU) World Hip Hop Championships in Florida US.

The global event was held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Orlando complex in April with athletes from 123 countries competing.

As part of Team Australia, Mr Thalmann put on a first class performance in unified hip hop and breakdance after months of solid training that involved travelling to Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.

Mr Thalmann said he had always liked pop music and was inspired by his older sister Elle who had practised dancing and cheerleading from a young age.

“I first tried out for world championship selection in October last year and continued training right through until March this year,” Mr Thalmann said.

“Ours was an open team of all ages with most of the competitors coming from Sydney so it was good for me to be able to represent Perth in the team.”

He said it was incredible to be part of a world championship winning team.
