A MIDLAND music identity has called time on a career spanning more than five decades, retiring from Music Mart as the long-running business enters a new chapter under new ownership.

Arthur Santoro has retired after 50 years with Music Mart, where he has worked as both an employee and former owner, becoming a familiar face in the local music scene.

Reflecting on his final days at the shop, Mr Santoro said it was a mix of emotions.

“It’s a bit sad, but I’m happy as well,” he said. “It’s a happy sort of feeling.”

A professional drummer, Mr Santoro began playing in the late 1960s and quickly built a career performing across Perth.

“I started when I was about 17, and by 18 or 19 I was playing weddings and shows,” he said.

“I was doing six nights a week at one stage, and then moved on to cabaret shows and touring acts.”

Over the years, he performed alongside a wide range of musicians, developing a reputation for his ability to read music and adapt to different styles.

“That was my favourite part, working with different acts,” he said.

“You’d get handed the music and just have to play - that was my strength.”

Mr Santoro said the music industry and retail environment had changed significantly during his time at Music Mart.

“The biggest change has been technology,” he said.

“When I started, we ran the shop with a cheque book. Now everything is computers - you can’t run a business without it.”

He said despite the changes, the shop’s connection to the community had remained constant.

“It’s been a consistent, happy job,” he said.

“You get to talk to people, be around music - it’s a good environment.”

Mr Santoro said working with customers and supporting the local music community had been one of the most rewarding parts of his career.

“I’d like to think people remember me as someone who gave back to the community,” he said.

“That’s what it’s all about.”

While stepping away from the shop, Mr Santoro said he had no plans to slow down, with music still a big part of his life.

“I’ll keep practising and playing,” he said.

“I’m not the sort of person to sit around – I’ve always been active.”
