AN individual has been handed an $1800 fine after being convicted of offences related to non-compliance with the City of Swan annual fire hazard reduction notice, as issued under the Bush Fires Act 1954 (WA).

The city submitted that the property was significantly overgrown with dead and dry vegetation, particularly along the external boundaries where there should have been firebreaks, and around the dwelling and outbuildings.

The Midland Magistrates Court imposed a fine of $1800 and ordered the offender to pay the city’s costs of $2500, with fines and costs totalling $4300.

The outcome sends a clear message to property owners to ensure action is taken annually to comply with the annual fire hazard reduction notice.

Failure to comply increases the fire risk for the entire community and can carry significant penalties, as demonstrated by this case.

“The City of Swan conducts annual inspections of fire prone properties, with more than 90 per cent found compliant on first inspection. This demonstrates the broader community’s strong committment to reducing bushfire risk,” a spokesperson said..
