A KALAMUNDA based environmental group is inviting the community to a public talk on prescribed burning and mining in Western Australia’s native forests.

The Nature Reserves Preservation Group (NRPG) Bushcarers will host the event on Wednesday, April 22 at 6pm at the Kalamunda Hotel.

The group, which has been advocating for the Kalamunda environment for more than 30 years, said the session would focus on issues affecting native forests across the Perth Hills and south-west region.

The event comes amid ongoing debate in Western Australia over prescribed burning practices and mining activity in native forests.

Campaign manager for the WA Forest Alliance Jason Fowler will speak about the impacts of logging, prescribed burning and bauxite mining on native ecosystems.

The presentation will focus on issues affecting jarrah forests around Kalamunda, including current mining activity, future expansion plans and bushfire management practices.

The WA Forest Alliance is a network of conservation groups focused on protecting native forests across the state.

NRPG secretary Steve Gates said the event aimed to inform the community about environmental issues affecting native forests.

Mr Gates said the group hoped the session would encourage greater community awareness and discussion about the future of native forests in Western Australia.

The talk will be held upstairs at the Kalamunda Hotel and is open to the public.

Residents interested in attending can contact Mr Fowler at jason.fowler@wafa.org.au or on 0487 806 385 for more information.
