THE Chidlow Cougars proved too strong for the Mt Helena Lions in their round three clash.

Chidlow’s Kaden Bonsak and Adam McKinlay both scored goals in quick succession.

When the ball did get into the Lion’s forward line it was rebounded out by Steven Scorer and the high marking Luke Elliott.

Bo and Zac Read battled hard in their backline pushing back against the continuous Cougars forward entries.

Charlie Read has assumed an on ball role this season and has offered much needed strength around the contests, by the first break Chidlow had opened a 20-point lead.

The Cougars continued to control most of the play during the second quarter.

Finton Kirwan cleared the ball out of a centre to the hard leading Kaden Bonsak.

He in turn delivered the ball to Adam McKinlay who converted his kick at goal.

Chidlow was starting to pull away with winners in most positions extending their lead to 49 points at the main break.

Mt Helena needed to get more involved if they wanted to be competitive in the second half.

Brendan Agnew and Daniel Bulla started to pick up more possessions around the ground getting the ball forward to where Rohan Murphy marked strongly then scored a much needed goal for the Lions.

Chidlow had minimally extended their lead by five points as the two teams changed ends to commence the last quarter.

Mt Helena hit the ground running as Michael Hine found Ryan Schwagereit with a pin-point pass, he in turn passed the ball to Charlie Read who then delivered the ball to Jess Cartwright who goaled.

Suddenly the Lions were doing the things that coach Matt Sofoulis had been asking for.

The Lions started to show what they were capable of playing with more consistency.

Both teams went goal for goal for the remainder of the game, as both scored four goals and four behinds each.

Kaden Bonsak finished off a well-balanced game with his sixth goal while Adam McKinlay converted his fifth.

The round ended with a score of 17.11 (113) for Chidlow, defeating Mt Helena’s 8.11 (59) score.
