THE Shire of Mundaring is once again seeking to reduce the speed limit on Sawyers Road after young Perth Hills man Luke Jones died there as a result of a crash.

A Shire of Mundaring spokesperson said the shire had not nominated a specific alternative speed limit but had sought consideration of a lower speed limit for the 80 km/h section of Sawyers Road.

“The shire’s concerns relate to the characteristics of this section of road, including the S-bend curves and the Heritage Trail crossing,” they said.

In 2016, the shire asked Main Roads for a speed limit assessment, following requests from the Mount Helena Residents and Ratepayers Association.

Main Roads concluded its assessment at the time, and the speed limit remained unchanged.

Shire president Paige McNeil said the shire has received further community requests for the speed limit to be reviewed following the crash.

“My thoughts are with Luke’s family and friends at what must be an incredibly difficult time. It is always tragic when a young life is lost, and I know this loss has deeply affected many people in our community,” she said.

Ms McNeil said concerns about the section had been raised by local residents, the Sawyers Valley Primary School community and Mt Helena Parkrun participants for a number of years.

“Council has advocated for a review of the speed limit and I have recently submitted a further request to Main Roads WA on behalf of our community,” she said.

A Main Roads WA spokesperson said the agency would consider any request from the shire to review the speed limit on Sawyers Road.
