NORTHAM Recreation Centre is set to host next year’s USKU International Karate Championships and Cultural Exchange where more than 150 participants will compete in a thrilling display of athleticism, technique and discipline.

From August 19 to 27, 2025 martial artists from around the globe will gather for an unforgettable week of competition, cultural exchange and community spirit.

The Avon Valley will transform into a global stage as karate practitioners from countries including Japan, New Zealand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, South Africa and more converge to showcase their skills and immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of Western Australia.

“This historic event will mark the first time the international karate spotlight shines on the region, offering our local community an incredible opportunity to experience world-class martial arts and vibrant cross-cultural interaction right in our own backyard,” Avon Valley USKU sensei Ken Bainbridge said.

“Local families will open their homes to international participants through a special homestay program, fostering meaningful connections and lifelong friendships.

“This event is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our community to not only witness martial arts mastery but also engage with different cultures from around the world.

“It’s more than a competition—it's a celebration of unity, respect, and cultural understanding.”

The event will kick off with a welcome party at Toodyay Memorial Hall, featuring a Welcome to Country by local Aboriginal Elders and performances that celebrate the region’s Indigenous heritage.

From cultural storytelling to hands-on wildlife experiences at Caversham Wildlife Park, the event will showcase the best of what the Avon Valley has to offer to international guests and locals alike.

With interactive workshops at local schools, cultural performances and a bustling competition schedule, there’s something for everyone, whether you're a martial arts enthusiast, a culture lover or just looking for an exciting family day out.

“We invite local businesses, schools, and community members to join us in supporting this incredible event. Whether it's volunteering, hosting international guests, or simply attending to cheer on competitors, your involvement will make this event an unforgettable success,” Mr Bainbridge said.
