SHIRE of Mundaring families recently joined playgroup incursions run by the shire’s emergency management team during child protection week.

The sessions introduced children to the protective behaviours message of, “We can talk with someone about anything, no matter what it is.”

Story time featured a puppet-adapted reading of Birdie and the Fire, while interactive games helped children explore how to feel safe if something frightening happens.

The highlight was a fire truck visit, where children met local volunteer firefighters and explored the equipment.

Parents took home document folders with local information and activities to start safety conversations at home.

Shire of Mundaring President Paige McNeil said the sessions helped build resilience from an early age.

“These playgroup activities remind us that preparedness begins with simple conversations,” she said.

“They equip families with practical tools and the confidence to respond calmly during emergencies.

“As we head into bushfire season, I encourage all families to create and practise their bushfire plan.”
