Man charged over Midland fire

A man has been arrested in Mirrabooka and charged over an alleged arson attack that left several businesses with fire damage.

DETECTIVES from the serious and organised crime division have charged a 46-year-old man with several offences in relation to a commercial business fire that occurred in Midland on Friday, October 25.

The fire gutted multiple businesses near Tuohy Lane early on the Friday morning and arson detectives continued to appeal for public assistance in the investigation, as reported in Midland smoke shop fire investigation continues (Echo News, November 1).

Initial CCTV released by police showed the white Nissan Navara crashing into the shopfront of A-Deal Tobacconist before the man fled the scene.

More footage was released later on October 30 depicting the accused walking on a footpath, in dark clothing as well as an alternate angle of the ram-raid and arson attack on the tobacconist.

The perpetrator could be seen fleeing with his clothes on fire as he ran across the street.

He was arrested in Mirrabooka yesterday following an extensive investigation by detectives.

He was subsequently charged with burglary and commit on a place, criminal damage by fire, steal motor vehicle, no authority to drive (disqualified from holding or obtaining), and failing to obey order given by an officer.

He appeared in Midland Magistrates Court on Wednesday, November 6 where it was alleged he deliberately drove the vehicle at the tobacconist store before dousing the premises with a flammable liquid and setting it alight.

Further inquiries revealed the vehicle was reported stolen from an address in Aveley on October 6.

The accused was remanded in custody to appear back in court on December 3.
