TWO decades of executive
hotel management and experience leading diverse teams across South America and Australia has
proven invaluable for Corporal Hakim Khan-Crofts’ new career in the ADF.
As a network technician at Pearce air base, Corporal Khan-Crofts works in the regional information and communications technology (ICT) services team to support Defence communication systems across Western Australia.
Before enlisting in the Air Force in 2021, Corporal Khan-Crofts held several general manager roles at hotel chains in Melbourne and Adelaide, where he managed multiple
properties and teams.
“My ability to relate to diverse cultures and unique individual characteristics enables me to establish trust, encourage cooperation, and enhance team cohesion,” he said.
“My background allows me to contribute positively to the Air Force every day by promoting a culture of inclusivity and mutual respect.”
For Corporal Khan-Crofts, diversity means embracing the unique characteristics of each person to build stronger teams.
“It allows us to learn from each other, broaden our perspectives,
and grow together both personally and professionally.
“A diverse team reflects the
values of inclusivity and adaptability, which are essential for success in dynamic environments.
“It also helps us build stronger connections with global partners and the communities we serve.”
As a native Spanish speaker,
Corporal Khan-Crofts looks forward to contributing to Air Force capability in international engagements with Spanish-speaking partners.
Corporal Khan-Crofts said it was a proud day when he first put on his uniform.
“I felt incredibly proud and I still feel that way every time I wear my uniform.
“My first day on the job was a
bit intimidating – in a good way – but
I posted into my unit with three other members from my recruit course, which made the transition easier.”
One of Corporal Khan-Crofts’ highlights so far was flying as a
passenger in a Hawk 127.
“The experience was unforgettable and a true reminder of the unique opportunities that come with serving
in the Air Force.”
Another highlight was his first posting at 1 Combat Communications Squadron, Edinburgh air base, where the team would share typical dishes from different cultures.
“It wasn’t just about the food –
it was an opportunity to learn about each other’s cultures in a personal and engaging way,” he said.
“This simple act of sharing
meals helped build stronger bonds within the team and fostered a
deeper appreciation for the diversity around us.”
