PICKERING Brook Hawks found themselves up against an in-form Chidlow Cougars team for their round seven clash, resulting in a 3.2 (20) to 24.24 (168) loss.
Chidlow came into the game with the extra motivation of one-time captain and coach, Matthew Mallaby celebrating his 300th game for the club.
It was a culmination of 18 years of dedication and a feat not achieved for some 10 years since Wayne Sowden from the Mt Helena club.
The Cougars were on song from the first ball up with Luke Elliott running rampant on a wing.
He collected the loose ball, driving it forward to the leading Blake Offer who converted his kick at goal.
Pickering Brook Hawks player Jackson Shilling seemed to be having the better of the ruck duels only to see Mallaby and Jake Forman sweep the ball away.
Steven Schorer and Tim Huntley intercepted most of the Hawks’ forward entries, carrying the ball deep back over the centre.
Hawk Ben Bowness was doing what he could to slow down the Cougars’ hard running midfield.
The Hawks entered the first break scoreless against Chidlow’s 30 points.
Hawks Joshua Vellinga and Mitchell Shilling defended stoutly allowing Jonathon Vecchio to get into the game.
Vecchio moved the ball forward to Logan Pfeiffer who got the Hawks’ goal scoring started.
Multiple Cougars players joined in the goal scoring and seemed to be lining up to take turns with Huntley, Schorer, Mallaby and Blake Offer all kicking goals.
Hawks William Nuttall and Ben Harffey battled hard although as soon as they could push the Hawks forward the ball was going back over their heads.
Chidlow outscored Pickering Brook by 16 points for the second to enter the main break holding a 46-point lead.
The Cougars continued the pressure after the break kicking another six goals to one.
The stand out highlight was the mark of the game taken by Cougar Jedd Simmons.
The last quarter was all Chidlow as they piled on another 10 goals to the Hawks’ nil.
Chidlow’s Joshua Liddle became dominant with successive goals, Mallaby rounded out his four-quarter game with his fourth goal.
Cougar Thomas Self enjoyed his running role deep in his backline precisely delivering the ball out to teammates Elliott, Forman and Jack Langridge.
Pickering Brooks’ Bowness, Jonathon Vecchio, along with Jackson and Mitchell Shilling tried hard all day.
In the end it was Chidlow home by 148 points.
