IN the Hills Football Association Anzac round on the weekend Pickering Brook were up against Gidgegannup.
The Hawks jumped out of the blocks with three quick goals and despite a late push by the Bulldogs in the final quarter, Pickering Brook held on to win 10.9 (69) to 10.2 (62).
Michael Brescassin was up and about in his forward line marking strongly and converting.
Jamie Soklich read the ball better from the contested ruck duels between Declan Whife and Jackson Shilling.
Each time the Bulldogs went forward they were cut off across their half forward line.
The Hawks had opened up a 28-point lead at the first break and appeared to be in total control.
Justin Pitt pushed Tim Tanner up onto the ball for the start of the second, Alan Rigg went forward while Beau Nairn was moved back in an attempt to repel some of the Hawks forward entries.
Gigdegannup started to work their way into the contest as they chipped away at the deficit.
The Hawks continued to attack the goals although accuracy was letting them down, whereas the Bulldogs were converting at almost 100 per cent.
The Hawks started to regain the momentum – Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Shilling were dominant in their backline driving the ball forward to where Adam Brescassin and Mark Caccetta delivered the ball into the forward line.
Shane Long and Dellan Butterworth both converted shots on goal.
With the margin opening up beyond three goals again it was up to whether the Bulldogs could stay in the game.
Jarrad Young and Liam Marriott stepped up to the plate swinging the momentum back in Gidgegannup’s favor.
At the final siren they were still coming and fell short by seven straight behinds.
