SWAN’S Muay Thai prowess was on display in the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre as fighters from Midland competed in one of the year’s biggest promotions.
Midland Mad Dog Martial Arts fighters Ashraf Farawah and Shell Read both stepped in the ring at Empire Fight series on November 2.
Farawah demonstrated speed and precision during his bout, and although his opponent began to push the pace in round two, it was the Midland fighter who came away with the decision win.
As reported in Midland’s Mad Dog kickboxers take home the trophy, Farawah’s style was untraditional in the sport of Muay Thai.
He preferred to remain light on his feet, dictating the fight through his movement and evasion instead of staying postured stolidly in place and advancing as seen in traditional Thai style.
Read had a last-minute change of opponent and ended up fighting the undefeated Maddie Black.
Read demonstrated her ever growing arsenal of weapons during her fight, first employing her boxing and finding success with her punches landing true on her opponent.
The bout however came down to a decision loss for the Midland fighter as Black edged Read out in the clinch with the opponent’s knee techniques proving dominant.
Mad Dog Martial Arts coach Slade Hutcheson said he commended both for stepping into the ring and demonstrating the grit and skill from the Midland area.
“I couldn’t be (prouder) of the work done by Shell Read and Ashraf Farawah in the weekend,” he said.
“Both coaches and fighters showed amazing skills and heart at the Perth Convention Centre on the Empire Fight Series.
“Mad Dog Martial Arts is a young and smaller gym compared to most gyms around.
“That makes the work these guys do even more significant.
“It takes the whole team behind the fighters to get the work done — we appreciate everyone for their help.
“A huge thank you to all the parents, kids and supporters we have to make our club run.
“We could not have the fighters without your support.”
