SWAN Districts farewelled one of its favourite ever sons and the club’s games record holder on Saturday and it was only fitting that Tony Notte went forward to kick a late goal but East Perth still came away with a 40-point victory.
The Swans were back at Bassendean on Saturday fresh off a stirring win the previous round on the road to an East Fremantle team who were sitting in second place on the WAFL ladder at the time.
Not only were Swan Districts attempting to build on that back on their home ground, but it was also the 323rd and final appearance in the black-and-white jumper for Notte who had announced his WAFL retirement during the week.
While the game did not go as Swan Districts were hoping with East Perth prevailing 13.8 (86) to 7.4 (46), it was a celebration to honour the career of Notte.
He even went forward to kick the team’s final goal of the game as he walked off for the last time.
Swan Districts captain Jesse Turner finished with 35 possessions and 15 marks for the day with Jye Chalcraft also picking up 31 disposals, Josh Cipro 29, Aidan Clarke 23, Otis Harvey 22 and Max Chipper 17.
It was always going to be an emotional day with the last game in the record setting career of Notte, but East Perth had plenty at stake too and started well with the game’s first couple of goals.
Swans did get one back before quarter-time to Max Chipper to cut the Royals lead to just five points.
Swan Districts managed just the one goal then in the second quarter as well which was kicked by 102-game midfielder Josh Cipro but East Perth managed to open up a 14-point lead at half-time.
Jehb O’Donohue and Jesse Turner kicked goals in the third term for the black-and-whites but up the other end the Royals added three more to be leading by 21 points at three quarter-time.
Swans did manage goals to Otis Harvey, Jackson McLachlan and finally Notte in the last quarter, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Royals scoring the 40-point victory.
